Campfire Notes: Cannabis 101
Cannabis is a flowering plant that contains naturally occurring compounds called cannabinoids and terpenes. These compounds interact differently for different people, which is why cannabis experiences vary widely.
This guide provides neutral, informational context about cannabis and Connecticut’s adult-use framework.
Cannabinoids
Cannabinoids are active compounds found in the plant. Commonly discussed cannabinoids include:
• THC — associated with psychoactive effects
• CBD — non-intoxicating and widely studied
More than 100 cannabinoids have been identified.
Terpenes
Terpenes are aromatic compounds responsible for scent and flavor. Examples include citrus, pine, earth, and spice. Terpene profiles contribute to how people describe a cultivar’s character.
Cultivars and Chemotypes
Cannabis cultivars are often described as indica, sativa, or hybrid. Modern science focuses more on chemotype — the balance of cannabinoids and terpenes that shape the plant’s sensory profile.
Forms of Cannabis
In regulated markets, cannabis may be available as:
• Flower
• Pre-rolls
• Vape cartridges
• Edibles
• Tinctures
• Topicals
Each category varies in onset and duration. Preferences differ among consumers.
Connecticut Adult-Use Framework
Cannabis is legal for adults 21+ in Connecticut. Products sold in the state are regulated through the Department of Consumer Protection (DCP) and tested by a licensed 3rd party lab.
Key state considerations include:
• 21+ age requirement
• Valid ID for purchase
• Public consumption restrictions
• Storage and safety expectations
• Laboratory testing and labeling requirements
Connecticut Required Consumer Warnings
Cannabis products and cannabis marketing in Connecticut must include specific consumer safety warnings required by the Connecticut Department of Consumer Protection (DCP). These warnings are designed to promote responsible use and public safety.
Connecticut-regulated cannabis products and related marketing materials must include the following statements:
“This product contains cannabis.”
“Keep out of reach of children and pets.”
“The intoxicating effects of cannabis may be delayed by two or more hours.” (Required for edible product)
“Cannabis can impair concentration, coordination, and judgment. Do not operate a vehicle or machinery under the influence of this drug.”• “Use of cannabis while pregnant or breastfeeding may be harmful.”
“For use only by adults twenty-one years of age or older.”
These warnings are required to appear on product packaging and are commonly included in cannabis advertising and educational materials to ensure consistent consumer awareness.
Responsible Use
Cannabis affects individuals differently. Adults are encouraged to start with low amounts, consume in a safe setting, and allow time to understand personal tolerance. Never operate a vehicle or heavy machinery while impaired. Store cannabis securely and out of reach of children and pets.
